Sustainable Agriculture

Smithfield Foods recently announced that it has engaged 80% of its directly sourced grain supply, more than 560,000 acres, in farming practices that reduce fertilizer losses and build soils. A case study authored by Datu Research with contributions from Smithfield and EDF examines the different grain sustainability interventions tried by the company — both those that worked, and those that didn’t — as well as the manure-to-energy projects Smithfield is implementing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This webinar gives an overview of the case study, which examined the shared value these initiatives generate for the environment, farmers, and Smithfield itself, and is a resource for other food companies working to achieve ambitious sustainable sourcing goals.

Speakers include Kraig Westerbeek, Senior director of Smithfield Renewables and Hog Production Division Environmental Affairs; Marcy Lowe, CEO of Datu Research and Maggie Monast, Senior Manager, Agricultural Sustainability, EDF.
