Choose a category below and let’s get started

40%

EPA estimates show that 40% of all food produced each year is wasted (meaning 700+ million tons of GHG was emitted for nothing).

40%

Crops only absorb about 40% of fertilizer. The rest is lost, causing pollution to our air and water.

+300m

Over 300 million tons of carbon are emitted each year to transport goods produced around the globe to the store shelf in the U.S.

2.5b

Electricity and gas consumption accounts for 2.5 billion tons of carbon pollution annually (by far the largest single source of supply chain emissions).

25%

Eliminating just 25% of annual global deforestation would prevent a gigaton of GHG emissions.

470m

Goods purchased through U.S. retailers account for 470 million tons of GHG annually.

Deforestation

A major environmental problem … and a major environmental opportunity

The key to tackling deforestation? Collective action.

After years of improvement, Brazilian deforestation rates are on the rise again. Companies have made commitments to reduce deforestation in their supply chains … but only half of them offer publicly available information on how they will get there.

It’s time to go beyond making commitments. We need collective action—across sectors, supply chains, NGOs and governments. An emerging opportunity lies in reducing deforestation across an entire landscape by engaging governments in conservation. Rather than farm-by-farm approaches, such as farm certifications—which are likely to lead to islands of green in a sea of deforestation—a jurisdictional approach allows whole regions to be categorized as reducing deforestation.

25%

Eliminating just 25% of annual global deforestation would prevent a gigaton of GHG emissions.

Collective action to catalyze change

EDF can help companies who are looking for innovative new approaches to solve deforestation at scale. Working together, companies can:

  • Send the demand signal for products coming from sustainable sourcing regions.
  • Encourage Brazilian governments through policy or multi-stakeholder initiatives, such as Mato Grosso’s Produce, Conserve and Include Strategy.
  • Promote sourcing and investment in regions that are improving along deforestation metrics.
  • Provide innovative financing to help producers reduce deforestation and improve agricultural productivity in sourcing regions; help connect partners on the ground with the funding they need to succeed.

Agriculture

Optimizing fertilizer use means growing more food with less pollution

Nitrogen fertilizer drives agriculture … and pollution

In just a few decades, there will be two billion more people on the planet. Our challenge is to feed this growing population sustainably without depleting the soil, polluting our water and worsening global warming.

Fertilizer is a key ingredient for increasing crop yields, but in any given year only 40% of nutrients applied are taken up by crops. The unused fertilizer is lost to the environment, causing pollution to the air and water. Globally, agriculture is responsible for one-third of greenhouse gas emissions.

Food companies, retailers and other supply chain actors can help by signaling unified demand for scientifically sound and economically viable practices to improve fertilizer efficiency, soil health and water quality.

1.7b

Grocery accounts for 1.7 billion tons of GHG annually—by far the biggest segment of emissions associated with the retail industry.

Help us send a demand signal down the supply chain

For more than a decade, EDF has been working with major retailers and food companies to promote sustainable agriculture and catalyze action to meet shared sustainability goals.

Here are ways you can engage with EDF:

  • Use our Greening the Agricultural Supply Chain website. A resource to better understand the benefits of fertilizer optimization, including examples of actions you can take, programs you can support, strategies and case studies.
  • Request a sustainable agriculture phone briefing. This briefing links you with EDF experts to discuss best practices in sustainable agriculture, including fertilizer optimization and manure management. We work with you in advance to ensure the proper focus for the discussion. Potential topics include:
    • Agriculture metrics and environmental impacts
    • Understanding best practices and industry collaborations
    • Setting a fertilizer optimization goal
  • Join the Walmart Fertilizer Optimization Initiative or other industry collaborations. EDF can provide information or connect your company to industry collaborations such as the Land O’Lakes SUSTAIN program, Field to Market and the Midwest Row Crop Collaborative.

Food Waste

Solving food waste means cutting costs and emissions while being better prepared to feed the world

More food wasted means more food must be grown

As much as 63 million tons of food is wasted in the U.S. each year, which generates the equivalent CO2 emissions of almost 212 million cars. EDF+Business is working to collect food loss and waste data on a diverse set of crops.

This data will help supply chains pinpoint areas of opportunity and devise tailored solutions for reducing food waste—which also means cutting costs, reducing emissions and increasing food efficiency—all while providing nutrition to better feed the world.

60m

Wasted food further impacts the climate in the landfill, where it emits nearly 60 million tons of carbon annually.

To confront food waste at scale, we need data

To better understand the full food waste issue, EDF is working with our partners to develop pilot waste prevention projects aimed at helping growers mitigate waste.

The first way your company can engage? Start collecting data to understand where waste is happening in your supply chain, which is the first step in understanding why it is happening and what can be done to fix it.

Green Freight

Create logistics networks that are more fuel efficient and affordable

Reduce emissions and improve efficiency

Freight movement accounts for 8% of all corporate greenhouse gas emissions, making it one of the largest carbon footprint contributors. The emissions come directly from all the trucks, trains, ships and planes that carry goods between each node of the supply chain.

There are huge financial incentives for reducing the environmental impact from freight … and companies have the power to make it happen. By employing smarter logistics strategies, they can operate more efficiently and affordably.

$20b

Each year, the retail and consumer goods industry spends over $20 billion dollars on diesel fuel for freight trucks alone.

Let EDF help you on your Green Freight Journey

There are many ways to engage with our team:

  • Download our EDF Green Freight Handbook: A comprehensive guide on everything you need to know.
  • Request a Green Freight phone briefing: An hour-long briefing that links you with EDF experts to discuss best practices in sustainable logistics.

Product Design & Use

A massive opportunity: what’s the next LED light bulb?

Innovative design: the key to everything!

When a product is being designed, every decision has an impact not only on how functional the product will be (or how much someone will want to buy it), but also on the impact that product will have throughout its life. Not paying attention to that impact can lead to wasted resources, hazardous ingredients and unhappy customers.

That’s why it is so important to make design “deliberate.” Carefully considering a product’s materials, safety, efficiency when being used, longevity and end-of-life can result in a safer product that has minimal impact on the planet … and delivers delight to the customers who get to enjoy it.

If you’re not already doing so, here are some questions you can ask when designing your products:

  • What raw materials are used?
  • Where do your materials come from?
  • What ingredient safety information do you have?
  • How are your products made?
  • In what conditions are your products being manufactured?
  • How will your product be packaged?
  • How are your products transported?
  • How will your products be used?
  • What will a customer do with them when they are done?

1.25x

The collective impact of using products sold from U.S. retailers is 1.25 times the footprint of their direct operations.

Let EDF help you make products that are safer and more sustainable

As supply chain experts, EDF can help your company understand the potential problems with the externalities of your products. What aspects of the process need to be addressed? How could this product be made “better”—less impactful on the planet and on human health?

EDF can help you bring more value to your customers while reducing environmental impacts by adopting a variety of strategies. Here are just a few of the ways to engage with our team:

  • Contact an EDF expert to learn more about producing products with more sustainable ingredients, cleaner energy, less waste and better transport.
